HARRISBURG, Pa. – At its board meeting on Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association affirmed it’s recent position to continue with fall sports in 2020.
The PIAA Sports Medicine Advisory Steering Committee voted to recommend that practices for all fall sports begin with heat acclimation beginning Aug. 10, as long as safety guidelines and protocols are followed.
There remains open dialogue between the PIAA, the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Department of Education, and the PIAA reiterated that it is allowing school districts to make decisions regarding fall sports.
The PIAA also approved return to play guidelines from various fall sports steering committees.
For football, that includes:
- Extending the team box to the 10-yard line for more social distancing
- Ball cleaning rotations
- Recommending face shields on helments
- Encouraging minimizing team huddles
- Requiring any team that has a player test positive for COVID-19 to quarantine for 14 days
The official motto adopted by the PIAA in the COVID-19 era is: ‘Protect Yourself, Protect Others, Protect the Season.
