PIAA Quarterfinal Spots up for Grabs in Class 2A Boys, 4A/1A Girls on Saturday

Quarterfinal spots are on the line in Class 2A Boys, as well as Class 4A and 1A girls on Saturday.

Boys: Class 2A
Girls: Class 1A • Class 4A

Kennedy Catholic and Ridgway battle in Class 2A boys, with D9 champ Ridgway also in action (Karns City will play Sunday), while the defending PIAA runner-up Villa Maria Victors are in action in Class 4A girls, as are Kennedy Catholic, Otto-Eldred, and Elk County Catholic in Class 1A.

Here’s a look at each.

                                      

CLASS 2A BOYS

(10-1) Kennedy Catholic vs. (9-2) Redbank Valley at Armstrong HS, 4:30 p.m.

It’s a D10 vs. D9 matchup as both teams feature a three-headed monster of a scoring attack. Chris Marshall, Bryson Bain, and Marquese Gardlock, who all played pivotal roles on the Bulldogs’ PIAA runner-up football team, combined to average more than 40 points per game, while Kennedy Catholic’s Elijah Harden, Malik Lampkins-Rudolph, and Gio Magestro combined for nearly 50 per contest. Also, look for Redbank Bank’s Owen (8.6 ppg.) and Mason Clouse as well. Both teams are coming off blowout wins in the first round, as Redbank (23-4) beat West Shamokin 58-31 and Kennedy (22-4) powered to a 77-44 win over Winchester-Thurston. The winner will play the Portage/Fort Cherry winner in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

(9-1) Ridgway vs. (7-3) Greensburg Central Catholic at Clarion U., 5:30 p.m.

Ridgway (21-5) is coming off a thrilling 47-44 win over Cambridge Springs in which they rallied from an early 13-point deficit. Dom Allegretto (17 points) and Jack Benninger (13 points) both hit big shots down the stretch, while Aaron Sorg had seven points and Dan Park six. They will be facing a GCC (19-4) team that is coming off an equally thrilling 62-60 win over Conemaugh Township in which Tyree Turner hit a game-winning layup at the buzzer. Ryan Appleby and Brevan Williams each had 18 points in the win for GCC, which led by as many as 19 in the game, while Turner finished with 11. The winner will play the OLSH/Carlynton winner on Wednesday.

                          

CLASS 4A GIRLS

(10-1) Villa Maria vs. (5-1) Bedford at Armstrong HS, 6 p.m.

The Victors had an easy time of it in the opening round, powering to a 60-21 win over Quaker Valley, while Bedford notched a 47-39 win over Elizabeth Forward. Jayden McBride led Villa with 15 points in the win. The Victors (22-2) are also paced by sharpshooting guard Carissa Dunham and forwards Daniela Shaughnessy and Addie Biel. Natalie Lippincott (16 points), Sydney Taracatac (13), and Josie Shuke (10) all scored in double figures to lead Bedford (22-5), as they went on an 18-8 third-quarter run. The winner will play the Blackhawk/Southmoreland winner on Wednesday.

CLASS 1A GIRLS

(10-1) Kennedy Catholic vs. (5-1) Shanksville-Stonycreek at Armstrong HS, 3 p.m.

Kennedy Catholic had no trouble in a 60-23 opening-round win over North Clarion, while D-5 champion Shanksville-Stonycreek took care of St. Joseph, 61-45. Paris Gilmore led KC (22-2) with 15 points, while Monique Vincent had 13 and Layke Fields 12. Gilmore, Fields, Bellah DiNardo, and Hayden Keith all average between 9.6 and 11 points per game. Senior forward Rylee Snyder erupted for 28 points in Shanksville-Stonycreek’s first-round win while Josie Snyder added 18. The winner will play the Bishop Canevin, Otto-Eldred winner on Wednesday.

(9-1) Elk County Catholic vs. (7-3) Union-New Castle at Clarion U., 4 p.m.

ECC (25-3) easily took care of Monessen, 52-23 in the first round, while Union (21-2) knocked off Farrell, 42-33. Syd Alexander scored a career-high 26 points for ECC in the win, while Tori Newton, Emily Mourer, and Lucy Klawuhn had seven each. Zoe Lepri paced Union-NC with 16 points, while Kelly Cleaver had 10 and Kylie Fruehstorfer eight in their first-round win. The winner will meet the Portage, Berlin-Brothersvalley winner.

(9-2) Otto-Eldred vs. (7-1) Bishop Canevin at DuBois HS, 4 p.m.

Otto-Eldred (23-3) took care of Bishop Carroll in the first round, 53-37, while D7 champion Bishop Canevin was a 52-32 winner over DuBois Central Catholic. Katie Sheeler scored 26 points in the first-round win for O-E, while Anna Merry and Carrie Drummond had nine each and Bri Heller five. Ashley Lippold led the Lady Crusaders (17-9) with 17 points with Josie Bochicchio adding 15 in their first-round win. The winner moves on to the PIAA quarterfinals, where they will meet Shanksville-Stonycreek/Kennedy Catholic winner.
