
DUBOIS, Pa. – Penn State DuBois advanced to the championship of the USCAA Small College World Series with a 9-3 win over UC Clermont.
The Lions scored four runs in the third inning to break a scoreless tie and extended that lead to 6-2 in the fifth en route to the win.
Grant Lillard got the scoring going in the third with an RBI single, followed by a bases-loaded walk to Cory Lehman, and a Brandon Sicheri 2-run single capped the frame.
In the fifth, Tyler Yough had an RBI fielder’s choice and Alex Gavlock followed with an RBI groundout.
Lehman added a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
McLain Welshans started and went 3 ⅔ innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits, striking out two, and walking four. Jeff Romano came on in relief and tossed 3 ⅓ innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out three.
Sicheri finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run, Yough was 1-for-4 with two RBIs, Lehman walked twice and scored a run and Colby Bodtorf was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Logan Wilson and Grant Gillespie had RBIs for Clermont.
Caleb Wesley took the loss, allowing four runs in 2 ⅓ innings on six hits, striking out two and walking one.
Penn State Mt. Alto and Miami Hamilton will play at 1 p.m. on Thursday, with the winner to meet Clermont at 3:45 p.m.
The winner of the second game will meet Penn State DuBois at 6:30 p.m. The Lions will claim the title with a win, and if they lose, would play again for the championship at 12 p.m. on Friday.
