Oct. 20, ’22 VB Recaps: Maplewood Tops Cochranton in Battle of State-Ranked Teams; Brockway Outlasts Brookville

GUYS MILLS, Pa. – In a battle of state-ranked Class 1A teams, No. 9 Maplewood rallied to beat No. 7 Cochranton, 3-2 (25-18, 20-25, 20-25, 25-12, 15-8), at Maplewood.

The victory avenged an earlier loss this season to the Cardinals for the Tigers, who were swept at Cochranton.

Sadie Thomas had a big night for Maplewood with 21 kills, 19 digs, and eight aces with Elizabeth Hunter adding 11 kills and Madison O’Hara seven kills and 11 digs.

Bailey Varndell set the offense for the Tigers with 38 assists while adding 17 digs and seven aces, and McKenna Crawford led the defense with 24 digs.

Brooklyn Needler paced Cochranton with 15 kills and 10 digs. Devyn Sokol added 12 kills, and Danielle Hoffman had seven kills.

            

Dana Jackson ran the offense for the Cardinals with 39 set assists and contributed nine digs, and Taytum Jackson had 16 digs.

BROCKWAY 3, BROOKVILLE 2

BROOKVILLE, Pa. – Lauren Rendos had 24 kills, eight digs, and three aces to lift visiting Brockway to a hard-fought 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 15-4) win over Brookville.

Kalina Powell led the Lady Rovers on defense with 25 digs while also serving seven aces, Sophia Schmader had five kills and 12 digs, and Savannah Ross ran the offense with 33 set assists while adding eight digs and three kills.

NORTH EAST 3, CORRY 1

CORRY, Pa. – Cadence Jones had 37 kills and 11 digs to help North East pick up a 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-23) win at Corry.

Kayla Forsythe added 10 kills for the Grape Pickers, who are ranked No. 4 in the state in Class 2A while Delaney Prather had seven kills and seven digs.

Grace Sanfilippo ran the offense for North East with 50 set assists and added 11 digs.

Makenna Moore had 13 kills, 20 digs, and two aces for Corry with Aubrey Chase adding 11 kills, two digs, and two aces and Halle Albers nine kills, 12 digs, and an ace.

Payton McCray ran the offense for the Beavers with 21 set assists and she chipped in 13 digs.

MEADVILLE 3, WARREN 1

WARREN, Pa. – In what could potentially be a District 10 semifinal preview, Meadville earned a 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23) win at Warren on Thursday.

The Bulldogs (11-3 overall, 7-1 Region 5) won the first two sets before the Dragons (10-4, 5-3) took the third. Warren nearly forced a fifth set, but a timeout with the set tied at 23-23 stopped Warren’s momentum and Meadville closed out the set to win the match.

It looked like Warren’s Kylie Fehlman had a block on Meadville’s Emma Parks, but Parks was able to get her hand on the ball as it was coming down and poked it over the net to give the Bulldogs a 25-20 win.

Emma Parks was as advertised for Meadville with 29 kills and 10 digs.

Sydney Holt had nine kills and eight digs, Kendall Mealy had 12 digs, Chae Kennedy served six aces, and Elliott Schleicher ran the Meadville offense with 39 set assists and eight digs.

Maddy Jones and Alexia Bowers each had a double-double for Warren. Jones finished with 12 kills, 13 digs, and two aces, while Bowers had 10 kills and 14 digs. Fehlman had nine kills, Carly Beers had five kills, nine digs, and two aces, Summer Lucks had 22 digs and four aces, Sophie Walker had two digs and two aces, and Lindsay Madigan had 32 set assists and five digs.

         

A-C VALLEY 3, MONITEAU 0

WEST SUNBURY, Pa. – Behind 14 kills and 10 digs from Lexi Ruckdeschel visiting Moniteau swept Monietau, 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-23).

Mackenzie Parks added seven kills and 15 digs for the Lady Falcons, while Jenna Stefanacci ran the offense with 20 set assists while adding nine digs.

UNION CITY 3, FORT LEBOEUF 2

UNION CITY, Pa. – Cathryn Reynolds had nine kills and 10 digs to help Union City rally past visiting Fort LeBoeuf, 3-2 (19-25, 8-25, 25-19, 25-14, 15-12).

Lucy Higley added six kills and 14 digs in the victory with Brooke VanTassel chipping in five kills.

Michayla Magee ran the Bears’ offense with 25 set assists and added 14 digs, Lily Vincent had 11 digs, and Angie Hopson chipped in six blocks.

Kayleigh Anderson had a match-high 15 kills for Fort LeBoeuf with Becky Whitman adding 15 digs.

Mackenzie Galdon ran the offense for the Bison with 30 set assists and also added seven digs.

COUDERSPORT 3, AUSTIN 2

AUSTIN, Pa. – Madyson Dubots-Angood and Sierra Myers each had nine kills to help Coudersport topple homestanding Austin, 3-2 (25-11, 19-25, 25-21, 24-26, 15-12).

Dubots-Angood added 23 digs and three aces with Myers contributing nine digs, four blocks, and four aces.

Emily Eckert ran the offense for Coudersport with 28 set assists and chipped in eight aces and nine digs.

Marah Fowler had 17 set assists, 13 digs, and six aces for Austin with Ella Brewer adding 23 digs and Kendyl Welsh five kills and four aces.

SHARPSVILLE 3, WILMINGTON 0

SHARPSVILLE, Pa. – Brenna Hanley had 11 kills and 10 digs to lead Sharpsville to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-18) win over visiting Wilmington.

Chase Fry and Bella Ritenour each added eight kills for the Blue Devils. Ryleigh Fry ran the offense with 30 set assists.

OSWAYO VALLEY 3, BRADFORD 0

BRADFORD, Pa. – Avaree Kellert had 16 kills, 10 digs, four aces, and three set assists to help Oswayo Valley finish off an unbeaten regular season with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-13) sweep at Bradford.

Olivia Cook added 11 kills, 12 digs, four aces, and a block for the Green Wave who also got five kills, 11 digs, two blocks, and an ace from Praylan Perkins.

Trinity Lundy ran the offense for Oswayo Valley with 31 set assists while adding five digs, two aces, and a kill.

Emma Swanson paced Bradford with four kills with Ludia Sarnoski adding six blocks and Lily Wells six set assists. Kali Dixon had four digs and four set assists.

HICKORY 3, GROVE CITY 0

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Raeley Gargano had 10 kills and 13 set assists to help visiting Hickory to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-13) win over Grove City.

Adalyn Duncan also added eight kills for the Hornets with Bella Multari helping run the offense with 13 set assists.

Delaney Callahan had seven kills for Grove City with Brooke Hovis adding seven digs and Kylie Mahaffey four blocks. Jaya Persinger ran the offense for the Eagles with 13 set assists.

NORTHERN POTTER 3, CAMERON COUNTY 2

EMPORIUM, Pa. – Molly Caddy and Rebecca Martin combined for 21 kills to lead visiting Northern Potter to a 3-2 (14-25, 25-23, 23-25, 26-24, 15-13) come-from-behind victory over Cameron County.

Cady had 11 kills with Martin adding 10 kills.

Kayden Brown ran the offense for the Lady Panthers with 25 set assists while Haylee Chapman added eight kills.

Caitlyn Palumbo led Cameron County with 13 kills with Aubree Lorenzo adding 12 kills and Navaeh Spaeth eight kills and two blocks.

Kendall Richards ran the offense for the Lady Raiders with 35 set assists.

CONNEAUT 3, GENERAL MCLANE 0

EDINBORO, Pa. – Kaylee Mattera had 20 kills, six digs, and two aces to spearhead a 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-15) road win for Conneaut over General McLane.

Sylvia Prebor added seven kills and four aces for the Eagles, while Payten Karastury ran the offense with 25 assists and seven digs with Mackenzie Wensel adding 11 set assists, four kills, three digs, and two blocks.

Lilli Mook had nine kills and seven digs for General McLane with Bailey Cannon adding eight kills and Rachel LeSuer 10 digs.

Abby Ball ran the offense for the Lancers with 25 set assists.

CLARION 3, CLARION-LIMESTONE 0

STRATTANVILLE, Pa. – Clarion closed out another unbeaten KSAC campaign with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-16) sweep at rival Clarion-Limestone.

Aryanna Girvan paced the Lady Cats with 15 kills and 11 digs with Hadlee Campbell adding 10 kills and eight digs.

Grace Ochs also had 10 digs in the win and ran the Clarion offense with 36 set assists, and Bri Pierce tied Girvan with a team-best 11 digs.

Kendall Dunn recorded her 1,000th career set assist for C-L and had 18 set assists in the match.

Jenna Dunn and Ansley Burke led the Lady Lions with six kills each with Sarah Bottaro adding five kills. Abby Knapp paced the C-L defense with 13 digs.

JAMESTOWN 3, KENNEDY CATHOLIC 1

JAMESTOWN, Pa. – Madilyn Enterline had 10 kills and 16 digs to help Jamestown pick up a 3-1 (25-20, 25-13, 20-25, 26-24) home win over Kennedy Catholic.

Morgan Bercis added seven kills and six digs in the win, while Taylor Keener ran the Muskies’ offense with 20 set assists while also contributing five digs and three kills.

KEYSTONE 3, CRANBERRY 0

KNOX, Pa. – Leah Exley and Audrey Burrows each had 10 kills to help Keystone to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-15) home sweep of Cranberry.

Exley also added three aces while Natalie Bowser set the Lady Panthers’ offense with 15 assists.

Ayanna Ferringer had a match-best 12 kills to go with six digs and six blocks for Cranberry.

Ashlynn Collins ran the offense for the Berries with 13 set assists.

SAEGERTOWN 3, FRANKLIN 1

FRANKLIN, Pa. – Alyssa Arblaster and Lyndzee Amory combined for 21 kills to help visiting Saegertown beat Franklin, 3-1 (22-25, 28-26, 25-17, 25-17).

Arblaster had 11 kills, two aces, and seven digs with Amory adding 10 kills.

Lindsey Greco ran the Panthers’ offense with 30 set assists while adding two aces, and Rylie Braymer paced the defense with 11 digs.

Sydni Hoobler had 11 kills for Franklin with Sydney May running the offense with 25 set assists.

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 3, ST. MARYS 0

ST. MARYS, Pa. – Behind 12 Tori Newton kills Elk County Catholic concluded an unbeaten regular season with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-16) win at crosstown rival St. Marys.

Reagan Bauer added eight kills and seven aces for the Lady Crusaders with Madison Marzullo chipping in eight kills and two aces.

Kiri Emmert ran the offense for ECC with 31 set assists.

Rylee Nicklas had seven kills for St. Marys with Lindsay Reiter adding three kills and 11 set assists.

MERCYHURST PREP 3, NORTHWESTERN 0

ALBION, Pa. – Addica Sperry had 17 kills and 12 digs to help Mercyhurst Prep knock off homestanding Northwestern, 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-15).

Julia Seth ran the offense for the Lakers with 32 set assists.

UNION 3, FOREST AREA 0

RIMERSBURG, Pa. – Taylor Shick had five kills to help Union sweep visiting Forest Area, 3-0 (25-5, 25-10, 25-10).

Katie Gezik added three kills for the Golden Damsels.

SHARON 3, OIL CITY 2

OIL CITY, Pa. – Getting a rare fifth-set shutout visiting Sharon beat Oil City, 3-2 (19-25, 25-23, 25-21, 20-25, 15-0).

Kylee Hasan led the Tigers with 11 kills, five blocks, and eight digs with Ondrea Young adding nine kills and five blocks and Kaylee Schell eight kills.

Cameryn Krecek had 10 digs in the win, while Kylie Weirck ran the offense with 20 set assists while adding five digs.

GALETON 3, PORT ALLEGANY 2

GALETON, Pa. – It was a wild affair in Galeton with the home team beating Port Allegany, 3-2 (22-25, 25-16, 25-20, 14-25, 17-15) behind 14 kills, two blocks, two set assists, three digs, and an ace from Alli Mackensy.

Olivia Rohrbaugh added 12 kills, 15 digs, two assists, an ace, and a block for the Tigers who also got 11 kills, 26 set assists, three blocks, six digs, and three aces from Johanna Dickerson.

Ella Mosses had a match-high 18 kills to go with five aces for Port Allegany with Madeline Smith adding 17 kills and 25 digs and Kayleigha Dowell nine kills, five aces, and six blocks.

Leigha Nelson ran the offense for the Lady Gators with 44 set assists.

LAKEVIEW 3, ROCKY GROVE 0

SUGARCREEK BOROUGH, Pa. – Visiting Lakeview swept Rocky Grove, 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-16).

Courtney Clark had nine kills, 10 digs, and two aces for Rocky Grove with Katie Beggs adding four kills, 10 set assists, and eight digs.

Lakeview stats weren’t available.

KANE 3, JOHNSONBURG 0

KANE, Pa. – Using a balanced offensive attack Kane topped visiting Johnsonburg, 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-18).

Mia Anderson had six kills and two blocks for the Lady Wolves with Maya Smith and Cora Jekielek each adding five kills and Mackenzie Blankenship chipping in two kills and three blocks.

Elizabeth Yasurek had a team-best 10 set assists with Jayna Johnson adding nine set assists.

EISENHOWER 3, IROQUOIS 0

ERIE, Pa. – Visiting Eisenhower got three kills and four blocks from Caroline Smyth to beat Iroquois, 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-14).

Layla Edwards and Mikenzie Miller each added two kills for the Knights while Carly Christianson had two blocks. Edwards added three blocks.

REDBANK VALLEY 3, NORTH CLARION 1

FRILLS CORNERS, Pa. – Izzy Bon had 13 kills and Alivia Huffman 12 kills to help Redbank Valley overcome a slow start on the road to beat North Clarion, 3-1 (24-26, 25-15, 25-21, 25-13).

Caylen Rearick paced the Lady Bulldogs on defense with 19 digs while adding two aces, Taylor Ripple chipped in five kills, Mylee Harmon had 18 set assists, and Allyn Hagan added 10 set assists in the win.

FAIRVIEW 3, HARBOR CREEK 2

FAIRVIEW, Pa. – Emma Willow had 15 kills and eight blocks to help Fairview hold off visiting Harbor Creek, 3-2 (25-13, 25-23, 20-25, 20-25, 15-8).

Abby Zablotny added nine kills for the Tigers while Julia Weindorf had 20 digs and Sophia Kuzmin six blocks.

Paige Wingerter ran the Fairview offense with 29 set assists.

OTTO-ELDRED 3, SMETHPORT 0

DUKE CENTER, Pa. – Homestanding Otto-Eldred got 10 kills and seven digs from Katie Sheeler and four kills apiece from Brooke Close and Carrie Drummond to top Smethport, 3-0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-14).

Close also added four aces with Drummond contributing six digs.

Anna Merry ran the offense for the Lady Terrors with 19 set assists while serving six aces and adding three kills.

Baylee Fitzimmons had 18 digs, five set assists, and a kill for Smethport.

CATHEDRAL PREP 3, ERIE 1

ERIE, Pa. – Cecelia Cambell had 45 set assists and eight digs to help Cathedral Prep to a 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-12, 25-22) win over visiting Erie.

Kaylin Laird led the Ramblers with 17 kills while adding six digs, Nikole McLallen had nine kills, eight digs, and five aces, and Jenna Wagner added six kills. Hailey Sliker also contributed five aces and nine digs in the win with Olivia Hutchinson adding 12 kills and six blocks.

SHEFFIELD 3, RIDGWAY 0

SHEFFIELD, Pa. – Kassidy Orinko had 11 kills, nine digs, and four blocks to help Sheffield top visiting Ridgway, 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-23).

Emily Foster added 10 kills and 21 digs for the Lady Wolverines who also got seven kills and three blocks from Lexi Goldthwaite.

Kadence Steffan ran the offense for Sheffield with 27 set assists.

GLENDALE 3, CURWENSVILLE 0

FLINTON, Pa. – Glendale took care of visiting Curwensville, 3-0 (25-18, 25-8, 25-7).

Lizzy Palmer had three kills, two digs, and a block for the Lady Tide.
