McDowell, Hickory Take Second; Moniteau, Warren Fourth; Karns City Fifth at Competitive Spirit State Championships

HERSHEY, Pa. – Though McDowell narrowly missed out on a third straight state title, Districts 9 and 10 put up another strong showing at the PIAA Competitive Spirit Championships on Saturday.

The two-time defending champion Trojans were edged by Butler for the Co-Ed title. Hickory finished second in the 2A Large Varsity division, while Warren was fourth, and Karns City was fifth.

In the 2A Small Varsity division, Moniteau finished fourth and St. Marys ninth.

The Trojans finished with judges’ scores (three-judge panel) of 87 across the board, and a final tally of 84.5 after deductions. Butler finished with a final score of 87.5333 after deductions. McDowell was sixth in the prelims on Friday, then took the top spot in the semifinals to advance to the finals.

Scores are out of 100 points.

Hickory and Warren each bypassed the semifinals thanks to their performances in the prelims on Friday, with the Hornets garnering the top score.

Though the Hornets didn’t have any deductions in the finals, Neshannock defended its state title with a final score of 84.4667 to Hickory’s 81.1333. Warren finished just behind Archbishop Wood 77.9667 to 77, as each team had a 1-point deduction. Karns City finished first in the semifinals and had a finals tally of 75.9667.

Moniteau and St. Marys also advanced directly to the finals, finishing second and third, respectively, in their prelim grouping. The Warriors had no deductions in their final performance and scored an 83.5. The Lady Dutch had a 0.5 deduction and finished with a final score of 73.9.

Harbor Creek also advanced to Saturday’s semifinals but did not qualify for the finals. Redbank Valley, Elk County Catholic, and A-C Valley did not make it out of the prelims in their respective divisions.
