SHARPSVILLE 12, WEST MIDDLESEX 6
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – A 5-run second inning got Sharpsville’s offense going and the Blue Devils scored at least one run in each of the next four innings on their way to a 12-6 win over West Middlesex in their District 10 Class 2A semifinal.

Trailing 1-0 to start the second, the first three Blue Devils walked to load the bases. Luke Distler hit a 2-run single, then Stephen Tarnoci hit an RBI single to make it 3-1. Jack Leipheimer hit a sac fly and, one out later, Brock Lenzi singled in Tarnoci to put Sharpsville ahead 5-1.

Sharpsville added a pair in the third. K Eckles and Leipheimer hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. One out later, Distler hit a sac fly to right, then Leipheimer scored on a passed ball to make it 7-1.

Lenzi hit a 2-run homer in the fourth to increase the lead to 9-1.

   

                  

The Big Reds struck for three in the home half of the inning. With one away, Eric Nehlen walked and Lukas Stinedurf singled to put runners on first and second. Gio Rococi singled and Nehlen and Stinedurf were able to score thanks to an error on the play. Kyle Hurley drew a walk before Devin Gruver hit a sac fly to left to cut the deficit to 9-4.

The Blue Devils got one of those runs back in the fifth. Cameron Williams drew a 1-out walk, then scored when Tarnoci reached on an error. Sharpsville took advantage of four walks in the sixth to push two more runs across and increase the lead to 12-4.

West Middlesex loaded the bases to start the seventh thanks to a pair of singles and a walk. The Big Reds brought one run in on a fielder’s choice and a second on a sac fly, but Leipheimer got Rococi to fly out to end the game.

Lenzi was 3-3 with the home run, two runs scored and three driven in. He also picked up the win on the mound as he allowed four earned runs on four hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.

Sharpsville will face Wilmington for the District 10 title on Monday.

                          

WILMINGTON 7, CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS 1
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Wilmington scored six runs in the first two innings and got five shutout innings from Jaret Boyer in a 7-1 win over Cambridge Springs in their District 10 Class 2A semifinal.

The Greyhounds put two across in the first and four more in the second to jump out to a 6-0 lead. That was more than enough for Boyer who gave up just five hits and walked two in his five innings of work. He struck out nine.

After Ben Miller reached on an error to start the game, Boyer doubled to put runners on second and third. Miller later stole home and Dom Serafino hit a 2-out double to plate Boyer and give Wilmington a 2-0 lead.

Dylan Batley was hit by a pitch to start the Hounds’ second, then courtesy runner Colby Lewis stole second and third. Lewis came in on Shane Book’s sac fly to right. With two away, Miller started a string of four consecutive hits with a triple. Boyer doubled, Garrett Heller tripled and Isaac Schleich singled to give Wilmington a 6-0 advantage.

               

Cole McCallister singled, stole second and third, and came home on a passed ball in the fifth for Wilmington’s seventh run.

Cambridge was able to scratch a run across in the seventh when Brock Cunningham drew a 1-out walk and Walker Cunningham hit a 2-out double.

The Hounds will take on Sharpsville for the D10 crown on Monday.

MERCYHURST PREP 3, FAIRVIEW 1

ERIE, Pa. – Hayden Zaffino had quite the day.

The senior standout hit a pair of solo home runs and also got the final out on the mound in Mercyhurst Prep’s 3-1 D10 3A semifinal win over Fairview. The two dingers came in the third and fifth innings.

Preston King trimmed the Prep lead to 2-1 with his RBI double in the fifth.

Mercyhurst’s Nate Lazan provided an insurance run in the seventh

Connor Fitzgerald was terrific on the mound for the Lakers, He went 6 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and one run. He struck out four and walked three.

Logan Fiolek suffered the loss, going 2 2/3 innings and allowing one run on four hits.

            

HICKORY 14, FRANKLIN 3

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Hickory collected 12 hits as they powered past Franklin, 14-3 in the Class 3A semifinals.

With the win, the Hornets advance to face Mercyhurst Prep for the D10 title on Monday.

Josh Distler was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Hornets to lead the charge. Matt Jordan collected three hits, scored two runs, and had an RBI, while Clay Wiesen and Joey Fazzone both had two runs and an RBI.

Connor Evans went five innings to get the win on the mound. He allowed three runs on four hits and six walks while striking out seven. Fazzone came on and pitched two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and two walks, striking out a pair.
