March 11, 2023 college roundup

IUP defeats Winston-Salem, 52-50
The 2023 PSAC Champions were challenged by No. Winston-Salem in a contest that came down to the final possession. A low-scoring affair, IUP’s defense made the difference as they picked up 15 steals in the game to force 21 Winston-Salem turnovers. Also contributing to the victory was an advantage at the foul line as the Hawks shot 16 free throws to just six for the Rams. Tomiwa Sulaiman produced the top performance for the team on the night with a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double that included the game-winning second-chance layup. Also in double figures for the Hawks were Shawndale Jones (11 points) and Jaylen Stewart (10 points).

Mercyhurst defeats East Stroudsburg, 72-66
In a tight contest, No. 3 Mercyhurst came up with the 72-66 victory over No. 6 East Stroudsburg. Despite a back-and-forth affair with 15 lead changes, Mercyhurst’s defense was too much to overcome for the Warriors as they accumulated 12 steals and 30 points off of turnovers. By the end of the game, scoring for the Lakers was evenly spread at the top between Nick Lang (16 points), Michael Bradley (16 points), and Aidan Reichert (12 points). Two-timely three-pointers from Bradley with under three minutes left to go gave the Lakers the separation they needed to win. For the Warriors, Carlos Pepin dropped a strong 25 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the floor, and Lakeem McAliley was his only other teammate in double figures with 13 points.
