Karns City, Kennedy Catholic (Class 2A), Erie (Class 6A) Boys Bounced in PIAA Quarterfinals

CORAOPOLIS, Pa. – WPIAL champion Our Lady of the Sacred Heart showed why it is one, if not the top, boys’ basketball team in Western Pennsylvania rolling past visiting Karns City, the District 9 champion, 75-45 in the Class 2A quarterfinals.

Karns City held its own for a quarter and trailed by four, 20-16, at the end of eight minutes but was outscored 20-8 in the second quarter and found itself down 16, 40-24, at halftime.

Six points from Daunte Spadafora and five from Brad Vaughn led the second-quarter blitz for the Chargers.

Spadafora led a quarter of OLSH players in double digits with 23 points with fellow standout guard Jake DiMichele adding 20 points. Vaughn and Dawson Summers each chipped in 10 tallies.

                                      

Nathan Walman closed out his Karns City career with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Chase Beighley, the school’s all-time leading scorer, added 12 points and seven assists. Micah Rupp chipped in nine rebounds to go with two points.

OLSH will face Portage in the semifinals Tuesday.

CLASS 6A

PITTSBURGH – Playing with just six players because of COVID-19 issues, Upper St. Clair upended District 10 champion Erie High, 62-57 in the PIAA Class 6A quarterfinals on Saturday. 

                          

David Pantelis scored 23 points for USC, while Luke Gensler had 19 and Ethan Dahlem 14 

The Panthers led by as many as 14 points, but Erie (19-4) rallied. 

Marquell Darnell had 18 points to pace Erie, while Marcell Banks and Jamie Smith tallied 11 each. 

With the win, Upper St. Clair advances to play Reading in the semifinals. 

CLASS 2A

PORTAGE 65, KENNEDY CATHOLIC 57

HERMITAGE, Pa. – Kaden Claar scored 10 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter to help Portage to a 65-57 win over Kennedy Catholic. 

With the win, the District 6 champions advance to play OLSH in the semifinals. 

Portage led by one, 27-26 at halftime. 

Claar was one of three Portage players in double figures, while Demetri Miller added 13 and Preston Rainey 12. 

                                   

Elijah Harden and Sean Yeager had 18 points each for Kennedy Catholic (22-3).
