Franklin Baseball/Softball Earn Shutout Wins; Hickory, Grove City BB Rally for Victories

FRANKLIN 2, SHARPSVILLE 0

BUTLER, Pa. – Luke Guth tossed five hitless innings to help Franklin to a 2-0 win over Sharpsville.

Guth struck out 11 and walked two, while Zach Boland tossed two scoreless innings to get the save, striking out three and allowing two hits.

Alex Wible and Ethan Nightingale had Franklin’s RBIs, while Aidan McCracken had a pair of hits and a run scored.

   

                  

Braeden Scarvel took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) in five innings, striking out three and walking three.

HICKORY 5, CONNEAUT 3

HERMITAGE, Pa. – Trailing 3-1, Hickory scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to rally for a 5-3 win over Conneaut.

In the sixth, Luca Bertolasio ripped a 2-run double and Johnny Leedham had the rare 2-run sacrifice fly.

Bertolasio had two of Hickory’s three hits.

                          

DJ Donatelli got the win, tossing two scoreless innings and striking out four. Tyson Djakovich got the start, allowing three runs (one earned) in five innings, striking out nine while allowing three hits and two walks.

Dan Bartholomew had the lone CASH RBI.

Dawson Thomas took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) in five innings on three hits, striking out eight.

GROVE CITY 8, MERCER 7

               

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Trailing 7-6, Grove City scored two runs in the sixth inning to rally for an 8-7 win over Mercer.

In the sixth, Andrew Swartzfager hit an RBI triple to tie the game and scored on a passed ball, which proved to be the game-winning run.

No. 9 hitter Ben Fischer was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs for the Eagles, while  Joey Hathaway was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Caden Wade got the win in relief, pitching 1 2/3 scoreless innings striking out two and working around four walks.

Cole Fisher was 1-for-2 with two RBIs for Mercer, while Taylor Bachman was 2-for-4 with a double, triple, two RBIs and two runs scored.

CATHEDRAL PREP 15, ST. BERNARD’S (Calif) 0

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Freshman Derick Friedman tossed four hitless innings with 11 strikeouts as Cathedral Prep blanked St. Bernard’s (Calif.) in their opening game at the Wolves Classic.

Offensively, Jason Fultz was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs, while Luke Costello belted a solo home run and Dominic Gorchinsky drove in a pair.

SOFTBALL

FRANKLIN 15, GROVE CITY 0, 3 innings

            

FRANKLIN, Pa. – Franklin scored 10 runs in the third inning to earn a 15-0, 3-inning win over Grove City.

Sydni Hoobler hit an inside-the-park home run and finished with four RBIs for Franklin, while Trinity Edge was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs and Gabby Laderer was 1-for-2 with three RBIs.

Edge tossed three hitless innings with six strikeouts, walking one.

SHARPSVILLE 11, MERCER 1, 6 innings

SHARPSVILLE, Pa. – Keeley Whitaker went 3-for-4 with a home run, double, and four RBIs as Sharpsville earned an 11-1, 6-inning win over Mercer.

Sharpsville scored four runs in the first inning and five more in the sixth.

Miah Applegarth went 1-for-3 with four RBIs for Sharpsville, while Lily Palko was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Whitaker also scored four runs.

Breanna Hanley got the win, allowing five hits in six innings, and striking out six.

Peyton Washil went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Mercer.

WILMINGTON 15, FARRELL 0, 3 innings

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Maelee Whiting and Paije Peterson both homered and drove in two runs as Wilmington blanked Farrell, 15-0 in three innings.

Graeson Grubbs was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a triple, and two runs, while Faith Jones was 1-for-2 with a double, RBI, two walks and three runs scored.

Stella Maynard struck out nine and allowed one hit in her three innings of work.

Wilmington has outscored its opponents 43-2 through three games.

JAMESTOWN 14, SHARON 2, 5 innings

SHARON, Pa. – Josie Pfaff belted a grand slam as Jamestown beat Sharon, 14-2 in five innings.

Miranda Biles struck out 10 in getting the win for the Muskies.
