JOHNSONBURG 38, ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 36

ST. MARYS, Pa. – Using a 10-2 second-half run, Johnsonburg picked up a 38-36 road win over Elk County Catholic ending the Crusaders 30-game home win streak.

ECC last lost at home exactly three years ago, Feb. 13, 2018, when Bradford picked up a 56-54 win. It was also the Crusaders first home loss to a Class 1A opponent since Dec. 11, 2012, when Johnsonburg beat ECC, 47-37.

How rare is a home loss for the Crusaders? Since the start of the 2014 season it is just the third time ECC has lost at home, and in the past 21 years, starting with the 2000-01 season, the Crusaders are 217-21 at home.

Johnsonburg pulled off the victory thanks to Gabe Watts and Cam Stelene.

With the Rams down 28-26 late in the third quarter, Stelene tied the game at 28. Watts then broke the tie early in the fourth quarter with a driving layup before Stelene made it 32-28 with an inside basket. Watts scored again to push the lead to six, 34-28, before Mason McAllister halted the run for a moment with a basket for ECC.

But Eric Christoff hit two free throws to send the advantage back to six, 36-30.

Mark Kraus wasn’t going to let the Crusaders got away without a fight hitting a pair of long-range 3-pointers sandwiched between Jefferson Freeburg hitting one of two charity shots, to make it a 1-point game, 37-36, with 30.7 seconds.

Watts then hit one of two free throws with 29.3 seconds left to make it 38-36.

With four fouls to give, Johnsonburg used all four of them between the 11.1-second mark and the 5.9 seconds.

After the sixth foul, Charlie Breindel drove the lane and was fouled by John Douglass with 1.3 seconds left.

But Breindel missed the first free throw forcing him to miss the second on purpose. The ECC guard did so my backing up a few steps and shooting while being in a position to rebound the loose ball, which he did in the corner in front of the ECC bench. But his desperation two at the horn was off the mark.

Stelene led Johnsonburg with 16 points with Watts adding 13 points.

Kraus led ECC with 12 points on four 3-pointers. Breindel added nine points for the Crusaders.
