ERIE, Pa. – District 10 Thursday, Sept. 24, announced how its postseason championship tournaments for Fall 2020 will look like including a reduction in the number of teams competing in the tournaments and home-site games throughout the tournament.

“The District 10 team sports championships (football, boys’ soccer, boys’ golf, girls’ golf, girls’ soccer, girls’ tennis and girls’ volleyball) and individual sports championships (cross country, tennis and golf) will have altered formats from recent years,” a release from District 10 said while noting that all formats are subject to change.

“Due to COVID-19 considerations, playoffs if contested at all, cannot be conducted as
usual. Any scenario may require quick and decisive action at any time prior to and/or
during any proposed playoff tournament.”

One of the guiding principles District 10 has taken from the PIAA is to reduce the number of postseason teams and contests.

“A smaller number of both qualifiers and contests are planned should the postseason occur for the 2020-2021 PIAA fall sports season,” the release said. “PIAA has passed a reduction in qualifiers for all sports to a champion only format in part to limit the total amount of travel. District 10 similarly has put in place its postseason plan as follows with that same thought in mind.”

All postseason games in teams sports will be played at the home site of one of the teams in the pairing with four teams in each team sport classification (where possible) qualifying for the championship tournament.

In regions of the same classification, Region champions will qualify. In Regions of mixed classification, the top team(s) entry into the playoffs will be determined by the top finisher(s) of that classification in Region Standing. Region representation may be a factor in determining qualifiers. A single classification team in a Region may not qualify (must have a 50% winning percentage or better in region play if playing teams above classification, 75% winning percentage if playing below classification. For ties in region standings, the District 10 tie-breaker system will be utilized.

Once the qualifiers have been determined then a home team for each game will be determined with the higher finishers in respective Regions hosting in each round.
“Examples: (a) If the teams of two different Regions with the same respective standing play, the team with the highest power ranking will host,” the release said. “(B) If one top finisher of a Region and a second-place team of another Region play, the top finisher of a region will host. (c) If two teams from the same Region are in the finals the higher finishing team will host.”

Guidelines for hosting a playoff game at home sites will be published separately.
“All contests must conform to any restrictions as ordered by the PA Governor’s
office, Department of Health, Department of Education and the PIAA,” the release said. “Further, restrictions if issued by any local jurisdictions (County government, City
government, Local Department of Health) must also be followed.

“The decision of the Tournament Director, District Chairman and/or District Executive Committee with respect to changes in any tournament, and, in the development of brackets is final.”

Here is a look at how each sport will be handled, again subject to change.
