DCC Softball Opens Season With Victory; Punxsy, Karns City, Mercyhurst Prep Earn Impressive Baseball Wins

SOFTBALL

DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 9, ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 0

DUBOIS, Pa. – Kali Franklin ripped an inside-the-park home run and Melia Mitskavich and Rylee Kulbatsky combined on a 3-hitter to send defending PIAA 1A runner-up DuBois Central Catholic to a 9-0 win over Elk County Catholic in the season opener for both teams.

Franklin’s inside-the-parker came in the fourth inning and made the score 5-0.

DCC also discord two runs in the first inning and broke the game open with four runs in the fifth inning.

Lauren Davidson drove in a pair of runs for the Cardinals, while Kayley Risser was 2-for-4 with an RBI, double, and two runs, Mitskavich was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Rose Whipple was 2-for-4 with a run and Lydia Morgan 2-for-3 with a double.

Mitskavich went the first three innings in the circle, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out four. Kulbatsky, a freshman, went four scoreless, retiring the final 12 batters she faced with six strikeouts, allowing just one hit without issuing a walk.

                          

Emily Mourer took the loss for ECC, allowing 13 hits, striking out one, and walking one.

WEST SHAMOKIN 12, REDBANK VALLEY 0, 5 innings

RURAL VALLEY, Pa. – Leah Mondi allowed just one hit as West Shamokin blanked Redbank Valley, 12-0 in five innings.

Mondi struck out seven and walked just one, as West Shamokin scored multiple runs in every inning.

Rachel Cecconi was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Malena Stewart and Madi Keirn drove in two runs each.

               

Madison Foringer took the loss for Redbank Valley, allowing nine earned runs in her four innings.

UNION CITY 11, GENERAL MCLANE 3

UNION CITY, Pa. – Lucy Higley homered and drove in four runs as Union City earned an 11-3 win over General McLane.

Alyssa Tingley struck out 10 in the complete game victory for the Lady Bears.

HICKORY 16, MOHAWK 8

HERMITAGE, Pa. – Loren Myers belted two home runs, going 4-for-4 with four RBIs for Hickory, but it wasn’t enough as the Hornets fell to Mohawk, 16-8.

Mohawk scored 12 runs over the final two innings to get the win.

Gigi Cowher and Lydia Cole drove in three runs each for Mohawk, with Cole also belting a home run.

Cowher got the win in the circle, while Hallie Miller took the loss.

            

BASEBALL

PUNXSUTAWNEY 13, CLARION 5

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – Jake Sikora went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, and three RBIs as Punxsutawney earned a 13-5 win over Clarion.

The Chucks scored 11 runs in the first three innings en route to the win.

Cooper Hallman was 1-for-2 with a walk and three RBIs for the Chucks, while Zach Dinger, Josh Tyger, and Carter Savage had two hits apiece.

Coy Martino pitched 3 ⅔ hitless innings of relief for Punxxy, allowing one unearned run on three walks while striking out eight.

Dawson Smail was 1-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs for Clarion.

Gary Matus took the loss, allowing five runs in ⅔ of an inning.

CENTRAL MOUNTAIN 14, DUBOIS 1, 5 innings

DUBOIS, Pa. – Central Mountain scored eight runs in the second inning and five more in the fourth on its way to a 14-1, 5-inning win over DuBois.

Elek Fravel went 3-for-3 with two doubles, three RBIs, and three runs to lead the Central offense, while Kelvin Probst was 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs, two walks, and a run scored.

Cru Stover got the win, going five innings and allowing just one run on two hits, striking out seven and walking two.

Jordan Ell hit a double for DuBois, while Aaron Andrulonis was 1-for-1 with a walk.

Noah Farrell took the loss, allowing eight runs in 1 ⅔ innings.

KARNS CITY 14, KANE 3, 5 innings

BUTLER, Pa. – Karns City scored eight runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 14-3, 5-inning win over Kane.

Jacob Jones went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs, while Mitchell Waldroup also drove in a pair of runs.

Karns City scored its 14 runs on just seven hits, taking advantage of nine free passes issued by Kane pitching, as well as three errors.

Mallick Metcalfe tossed all five innings to get the win, allowing three runs on seven hits, striking out five, and walking two.

Luke Ely went 3-for-3 with an RBI for Kane.

Landon Darr suffered the loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) in ⅔ of an inning.

CORRY 7, NORTH EAST 6

CORRY, Pa. – Caleb Daniels hit a fly ball that resulted in an error and the game-ending run for Corry in a 7-6 win over North East.

It capped a 3-run rally for the Beavers, who trailed 6-4 going to the bottom of the seventh. Jacob Curberry was 1-for-2 with two RBIs for Corry, while Ethyn Allen was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Daniels also had two RBIs and Zack Martin was 1-for-4 with two runs scored.

Kamdyn Moon got the win, allowing two runs in 2 ⅔ innings, striking out two, walking two, and allowing four hits.

Tommy Owens went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs for North East.

Andrew Aspden took the loss, allowing one unearned run in one inning on two hits allowed and two walks.

UNION CITY 12, JAMESTOWN 4

JAMESTOWN, Pa. – Four different Union City players drove in two runs each in a 12-4 win over Jamestown.

Daithan Kent, Bryce Drayer, Trevin Capela, and Lucas Doutt all had two RBIs, while Doutt also had two doubles.

The Bears built an 8-3 lead after the third inning and scored three more times in the fifth en route to the win.

Aiden Shuman got the win, allowing one run in five innings on three hits, striking out seven.

MERCYHURST PREP 3, MEADVILLE 0

ERIE, Pa. – Jake Manendo and Hunter Krahe combined on a 4-hitter as Mercyhurst Prep beat Meadville, 3-0.

Manendo allowed just three hits in four innings with eight strikeouts, while Krahe went three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

Kolten Kruszewski had an RBI for the Lakers in the win. Mercyhurst also took advantage of four Meadville errors.
