D9 Football League Releases Updated Schedules

BROOKVILLE, Pa. – The District 9 Football League has released a 2020 football schedule that will include potentially at least seven regular-season games for teams not in the Intermediate Unite 9 “bubble” and six-regular season games for teams in the IU-9 “bubble”.

The schedule could go beyond the seven- and six-game slate and return into a nine- or eight-game schedule for a couple of reasons including no postseason competition being played or a team not making the postseason. Currently, only a District 9 championship game is scheduled in the four classifications – Class 1A, Class 2A, Class 3, and Class 4A – that have football membership in District 9, although it is possible that a semifinal round could be added the week prior to the championship games. The District 9 Committee will make the final decision on how teams would qualify for a potential postseason.

The reason for the seven-game vs. six-game schedule is because 14 schools in IU9 plus Elk County Catholic (nine of the 14 plus ECC play football) have agreed not to start playing football until Sept. 18, while the schools outside of IU9 will start Sept. 11. IU9 schools, plus ECC, made a decision to not play regular-season events in the at least the Fall against any team not in IU9 (except for ECC, which has a private school is not part of the intermediate unit but is the only school in Elk County that isn’t in IU9).

A four-pod setup will be used with there being a non-IU9 with District 9 being separated into a Southern Small School and Big School Division and an IU9 Small School and Big School Division.

The Southern Small School Division will be made up of six teams including Brockway, Curwensville, Sheffield, Keystone, Redbank Valley, and Union/A-C Valley. Each school will play every school in the division once with some schools playing the same opponent a second time (at least two games will be home-and-home series with the potential of up to four games being home-and-home series).

The Southern Big School Division will be made up of six teams including Brookville, Punxsutawney, Moniteau, Karns City, Central Clarion County, and DuBois. Each school will play every school in the division once with some schools playing the same opponent a second time (at least two games will be home-and-home series with the potential of up to four games being home-and-home series).

The IU9 Small School Division will be made up of six teams including Coudersport, Cameron County, ECC, Otto-Eldred, Port Allegany, and Smethport. Each school will play every school in the division once and will play at least one opponent a second time. If a team in the division goes into the seventh and eighth weeks then they will either crossover and play school(s) from the IU9 Big School Division or play team(s) from the Small School Division a second time.

The IU9 Big School Division will be made up of four teams including Bradford, St. Marys, Kane, and Ridgway. Each school will play every school in the division twice in a home-and-home series. If a team in the division goes into the seventh and eighth weeks then they will crossover and play a school from the IU9 Small School Division.

Clearfield is the only District 9 football-playing school not included in this setup, as the Bison were not a member of the District 9 Football League but instead a member of the District 6-centric Mountain League. Clearfield will play a modified Mountain League schedule.

The schedule for the teams in the Southern Divisions would start Sept. 11 and run through Oct. 23 for the teams making the District 9 title games and through Nov. 7 for the teams not making the title games or for all teams if there are no title games. The schedule for teams in the IU9 Division would start Sept. 18 and run through Oct. 23 for the teams making the District 9 title games and through Nov. 6 for the teams not making the title games or for all teams if there are no title games.

District 9 championship games are currently listed as “potentially” happening on the schedule and would take place Oct. 30 with a “potential” PIAA playoffs starting Nov. 6. The PIAA has yet to decide if and how it will conduct a postseason tournament. Criteria for how a team would qualify for the potential District 9 title games have yet to be released.
