Clearfield Takes 2024 Team Title at D9 2A Individual Wrestling Championships; Bison Sending 11 to Regionals; Seven Repeat Champions Powered by Luton’s Plumbing, Heating, A/C

CLARION, Pa. – With 11 Regional qualifiers, including three District 9 champions, Clearfield easily won the 2024 team title at the District 9 2A individual tournament Saturday at PennWest Clarion’s Tippin Gym.

The Bison scored 234 points to top second-place Port Allegany by 48 points. Clearfield also beat the Gators for the dual meet tournament title held earlier this month.

St. Marys took third with 153 points with Cranberry fourth with 140.5 and Brockway fifth with 134.0.

Brockway’s Weston Pisarchick was named the Outstanding Wrestler after winning his fourth straight District 9 title, this time at 127 pounds.

Clearfield and Brookville led the way with three champions each, while seven wrestlers repeated as D9 champions, including three winning their third straight titles and Pisarchick with his fourth in a row.

Champions for Clearfield included Cash Diehl at 121 pounds, Colton Ryan at 133 pounds, and Brady Collins at 152 pounds.

Brookville’s champions were Cole Householder at 145 pounds, Easton Belfiore at 189 pounds, and Gavin Hannah at 215 pounds.

For Collins and Householder, it was each their third D9 title.

Collins won at 126 pounds as a freshman in 2022 and at 139 pounds as a sophomore in 2023, while Householder won at 120 pounds as a freshman in 2022 and at 127 pounds as a sophomore in 2023.

Kane senior Reese Bechakas joined those two in the three-champion club. Bechakas won at 145 pounds as a sophomore in 2022 and at 152 pounds last year before taking home the 160-pound title this year.

Port Allegany’s Carson Neely defended his title at 285 pounds, while Cranberry’s Dalton Wenner (114 pounds) and Brockway’s Parker Pisarchick (139 pounds) also won their second straight titles. Wenner won at 107 pounds last year while Parker Pisarchick won at 133 pounds in 2023.

Joining Clearfield’s Ryan and Diehl and Brookville’s Belfiore and Hannah as first-time winners were Cranberry’s Aiden Thompson at 107 pounds and St. Marys’ Andrew Wolfanger at 172 pounds.

Three championship bouts went to sudden victory with Thompson beating Ridgway’s Michael Copello, 8-6, for the 107-pound title, Parker Pisarchick beating Johnsonburg’s Rocco Allegretto, 6-4, at 139 pounds, and Belfiore beating Clearfield’s Carter Chamberlain, 3-1, for the 189-pound title.

                           

Two bouts were decided by technical fall – Collins over Johnsonburg’s Avery Bittler at 152 pounds (22-6, 2:21) and Bechakas over Port Allegany’s Mason Gordon at 160 pounds (15-0, 4:43) – and one was decided by pin – Neely over Central Clarion’s Josh Beal at 285 pounds (1:47).

In addition to the three champions, Clearfield also had one second-place finisher in Carter Chamberlain at 189 pounds, three third-place finishers – Ty Aveni at 145 pounds, Will Domico at 160 pounds, and Nick Bailor at 285 pounds, and four fourth-place finishers – Dakota Shugarts at 114 pounds, Bryndin Chamberlain at 127 pounds, Colton Bumbarger at 139 pounds, and Carter Freeland at 172 pounds. All 11 of those wrestlers qualified for next week’s Northwest Regionals at Sharon High School.

Port Allegany added eight Regional qualifiers.

In addition to the champion Neely, Mason Gordon took second at 160 pounds, Aiden Bliss took second at 172 pounds, and Miska Yougn took second at 215 pounds. Third-place finishers for the Gators included Ian Fitzsimmons at 114 pounds, Ian O’Shea at 121 pounds, and Juuso Young at 189 pounds while taking fourth for Port Allegany was Alden Ferguson at 145 pounds.

Cranberry and Brockway will each be taking six wrestlers to Regionals.

In addition to the champions – Thompson and Dalton Wenner – Cranberry had one second-place finisher in Elijah Broscious at 127 pounds, two third-place finishers in Dane Wenner at 139 pounds and Devyn Fleeger at 152 pounds, and one fourth-place finisher in Alex McLaughlin at 133 pounds.

Brockway’s Regional qualifiers include the two Pisarchicks who were champions, third-place finisher at 133 pounds Colton Ross and fourth-place finishers Gage Park (107 pounds), Dylan Bash (152 pounds), and Johnathon Winnings at 285 pounds.

Brookville and St. Marys each have four Regional qualifiers.

For the Raiders, the three champions – Householder, Belfiore, and Hannah – are joined by second-place finisher Jared Popson (121 pounds).

For the Dutch, Wolfanger is joined by second-place finisher Jaden Wehler at 145 pounds, third-place finisher Aiden Beimel at 127 pounds, and fourth-place finisher Jayce Walter at 121 pounds.

Central Clarion and Curwensville are each sending three to Regionals.

For the Wildcats, Logan Powell took second at 133 pounds while Beal was second at 285 pounds and Jacob Henry was fourth at 160 pounds.

The Golden Tide saw Austin Gilliland (107 pounds) and Logan Augenbaugh (172 pounds) each take third while Trenton Guiher was fourth at 215 pounds.

Ridgway and Johnsonburg had a pair of Regional qualifiers with a pair of second-place finishers – Copello at 107 pounds and Nathan Stager at 114 pounds – for the Elkers and a pair of second-place finishers Allegretto at 139 pounds and Bittler at 152 pounds – for Johnsonburg

Kane – Bechakas champion at 160 pounds, Coudersport – Gavyn Ayers third at 215 pounds – and Sheffield – Trenton Mead fourth at 189 pounds – each had one qualifier giving District 9 Regional qualifiers from 13 different schools.

BREAKDOWN OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES

107 POUNDS: (2) Aiden Thompson (Cranberry) decision (1) Michael Copello (Ridgway), 8-6 SV

Copello grabbed a 4-1 lead at the end of the first period but an escape and then takedown at 36 seconds helped Thompson tie the bout at the end of the second period.

Thompson then took a 6-4 lead with a takedown with 31 seconds left in the third period, but Copello got a reversal as time ran out to force sudden victory.

In sudden victory, Thompson won on a takedown with 26 seconds left.

114 POUNDS: (1) Dalton Wenner (Cranberry) decision over Nathan Stager (Ridgway), 10-4

Wenner led 4-1 at the end of the first period thanks to a pair of takedowns, but Stager got an escape followed by a takedown at 1:34 of the second period to tie the bout at 4-4.

Wenner, however, went back in front for good with a reversal at 1:22 and then had a three-point nearfall with 56 seconds left in the period to take a 9-4 lead into the final period

121 POUNDS: (1) Cash Diehl (Clearfield) decision over (2) Jared Popson (Brookville), 5-0

Diehl had a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period thanks to a takedown midway through the period before adding an escape and a second takedown in the second period.

127 POUNDS: (1) Weston Pisarchick (Brockway) decision over (2) Elijah Brosius (Cranberry), 4-3

133 POUNDS: 133: (2) Colton Ryan (Clearfield) decision over (1) Logan Powell (Central Clarion), 10-4

A takedown at 1:08 of the first period got Ryan the early lead and then he followed with a two-point nearfall with 21 seconds left to go up 4-0.

Ryan continued to dominate in the second period making the score 9-0 with a takedown at 1:06 and a three-point nearfall at 46 seconds before Powell was able to get a reversal with seven seconds left to go into the final period down seven, 9-2.

But an escape by Ryan with 44 seconds left made it 10-02 before Powell finished the scoring with a takedown with 26 seconds left.

139 POUNDS: (1) Parker Pisarchick (Brockway) decision over (3) Rocco Allegretto (Johnsonburg), 6-4 SV

This one went back and forth in the first two periods with Pisarchick leading 2-1 after a period before Allegretto took a 4-2 lead on an early escape followed by a takedown with 39 seconds left in the second period.

But Pisarchick got an escape with 32 seconds left in the second to make it 4-3 then got an early escape in the third before neither wrestler was able to score.

In Sudden Victory, it took Pisarchick until there were 18 seconds left to win on a takedown.

145 POUNDS: (1) Cole Householder (Brookville) decision over (2) Jaden Wehler (St. Marys), 8-1

After a scoreless first period, Householder took a 3-0 lead after two with an escape and a takedown with 31 seconds left.

In the third period, Wehler, last year’s champion at the weight class, got an escape with 55 seconds left to make it 3-1, but Householder got a takedown with 45 seconds left and then a three-point nearfall as time expired.

152 POUNDS: (1) Brady Collins (Clearfield) won by technical fall over (3) Avery Bittler (Johnsonburg), 22-6 2:21

Collins had three three-point nearfalls in the first period and led 17-5 at the end of the period on his way to the technical fall.

160 POUNDS: (1) Reece Bechakas (Kane) won by technical fall over (3) Mason Gordon (Port Allegany), 15-0 4:43

Bechakas led 4-0 at the end of the first period but scored nine second-period points including a pair of three-point nearfalls at 49 and 32 seconds to take control.

172 POUNDS: (1) Andrew Wolfanger (St. Marys) decision over (2) Aiden Bliss (Port Allegany), 7-4

The match was tied at 3 at the end of two periods after Bliss had a takedown in the first period and an escape in the second and Wolfanger had an escape and a takedown in the second period.

The score remained that way until late in the third period when Wolfanger got a takedown with 32 seconds left before Bliss escaped with 24 seconds left.

Wolfanger, thought, put the bout away with a takedown with 19 seconds to wrestle.

189 POUNDS: (2) Easton Belfiore (Brookville) decision over (2) Carter Chamberlain (Clearfield), 3-1 SV

A takedown with a minute left in Sudden Victory gave the win to Belfiore.

Before that, Belfiore led 1-0 with an escape at 1:14 of the second before Chamberlain got an escape at 1:28 of the third.

215 POUNDS: (3) Gavin Hannah (Brookville) decision over (1) Miska Young (Port Allegany), 5-0

Hannah grabbed a 2-0 lead with a takedown at 1:16 of the first period before getting an escape in the second period to go up 3-0. He then finished off the victory with another takedown midway through the third period.

285 POUNDS: (1) Carson Neely (Port Allegany) pinned Josh Beal (Central Clarion), 1:47

Neely took control early with a takedown 13 seconds in before getting a nearfall with 1:10 left in the opening period. He then finished off Beal 57 seconds later with the pin.
