LEXINGTON, Ky. – Clarion volleyball coach Shari Campbell was named one of four AVCA Region 2 Coaches of the Year Wednesday.

Campbell is joined in Region 2 by Elizabeth Powell of Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest in New Jersey, Bill Pribac of St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C., and Gary Troy of Mount de Sales Academy in Maryland.

This is the second annual class of AVCA High School Region Coaches of the Year. With a total of 10 regions representing all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia, each naming four honorees, there is a total of 40 coaches awarded.

Due to COVID-19 causing the postponement of some of the 2020 Fall seasons, regions in which some states were not competing this Fall had the option to name a portion of their Region Coaches of the Year at this time, with the remainder chosen following the Spring competition season.

Campbell has led Clarion to a 23-0 record and a spot in Saturday’s PIAA Class 1A championship match against Marian Catholic.

The Lady Cats have won 66 of their 67 sets including going a perfect 12-0 in four postseason matches. Clarion, which has won 57 straight sets, defeated Oswayo Valley 25-8, 25-10, 25-7 in the District 9 semifinals then dispatched Elk County Catholic 25-13, 25-8, 25-10 to win a third straight D9 title. The Lady Cats, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A in the state by the PVCA, then knocked off the No. 2 ranked team in consecutive PIAA playoff rounds to advance to the title tilt topping West Shamokin 25-10, 25-23, 25-11 and Bishop Canevin 25-14, 25-15, 25-14.

The win over Oswayo Valley gave Campbell, who is in her 22nd year at Clarion after spending three seasons at Clarion-Limestone, her 400th career win. That includes a PIAA championship in 2012 and PIAA runner-up finishes in 2010 and 2011.
