Brookville Claims First NW 2A Regional Title Since 1997; St. Marys Grapplers Claim Pair of Golds in 3A Powered by Luton’s Plumbing, Heating and A/C

The 2022 NW Region team champion Brookville Raiders.

SHARON, Pa. – It was a banner day at the PIAA Class 2A Northwest Regional championships for the Brookville Raiders, as they crowned a pair of champions on their way to taking home the team title for the first time since 1997 with 141 points, easily outdistancing second-place Reynolds (98).

At 120 pounds Cole Householder became the first Brookville freshman to win a regional title, scoring a 3-1 win over previously unbeaten Hunter Gould of Conneaut, while Owen Reinsel continued his dominant postseason run with a 15-0 tech fall of Cochranton’s Jack Martinec in the 132-pound final.

“I don’t know exactly what it does for our team,” said Brookville coach Dave Klepfer. “For our program, it’s pretty big because. “Twenty-five years, you know? And to come here and win this you obviously have to push some guys through to Hershey. Getting six through is a good number. Coming in we thought we could get six or seven on a really great weekend, maybe eight, but it’s pretty big for our program.

The Raiders are indeed sending six to Hershey (the top four in each weight class advance), as is Hickory, while Reynolds and Saegertown are sending five, Brockway four, and Hickory three.

“We’re pretty thrilled,” said Brockway coach Eric Grecco. “We know we could get five out if we came in here and wrestled the perfect tournament. We got four kids through, three finalists, and one champion, so yeah, we’re pretty pleased with our performance. Being able to finish third overall in the team race, we were actually in second until Reynolds got that last one there in the finals, but yeah, I mean a top three finish with a school of our size, we’re thrilled to be in that position.”

Harbor Creek’s Connor Pierce won his third-consecutive regional crown, pinning Hickory’s Connor Saylor in the second period in the 138-pound final. Pierce also beat Saylor last week at the District 10 championships.

He talked about his performance afterward, and also a potential gold medal run in Hershey:

Saegertown’s Hunter Robison and Corry’s Hayden Linerkhof repeated as champions, with Robison winning a thriller over Brockway’s Weston Pisarchick at 113, 4-3, and Linkerhof getting an 11-3 major decision over Brookville’s Bryce Rafferty.

Linkerhof’s performance was followed by teammate Xavier Reyda getting a pin in the 285-pound final, the second week Reyda has done so against Saegertown’s Josh Perrine.

It also made the Beavers one of three teams to have two gold medalists, joining Hickory’s Louie (106) and Carter (145) Gill, as well as Householder and Reinsel for Brookville.

Louie Gill was dominant in earning a 15-0 tech fall over Saegertown’s Carter Beck, while Carter earned a 17-7 major decision over Girard’s Story Buchanan. It was the second consecutive week the Gills beat the same opponent in the finals.

Reinsel, a senior, put together a dominant tournament, earning a pin and a pair of tech falls to capture that elusive regional crown.

“I’m super happy to get this title, it means a lot, especially after losing to Gary (Reynolds’ Gary Steen),” Reinsel said. “We were talking about it (winning the team title) all week, that we were going to be in the running with Hickory, Brockway…it’s pretty exciting. It was a Brookville show today.

“If I can pin a kid, then yeah, for sure I’m going to get the pin to get the most team points, but if I can’t pin them I can get back points and tech them, it’s equally good to me.”

Brockway’ Seth Stewart also got to the finals, where he was pinned by Greenville’s Cole Karpinski, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the state at 189.

Back to Palmer, a pair of pins to get to the finals and earned an 8-0 major decision over Fort LeBoeuf’s JoJo Przybycien.

Palmer talked about his performance afterward:

At 152, it was a measure of revenge for Reynolds’ Kane Kettering. After losing at sectionals and districts to Grove City’s Hunter Hohman, Kettering earned a 6-4 decision to hand Hohman his first loss of the season.

Kettering talked about the win afterward:

At 160, it was Johnsonburg’s Aiden Zimmerman earning a 7-2 win over Conneaut’s Collin Hearn to claim gold. Both grapplers earned decision victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals to get to that championship bout.

Zimmerman’s teammate, Kaden Dennis, followed him in the 172-pound final. It was District 10 champion Brock Covell of Titusville who came away with the win in a tough defensive bout, earning an escape for the match’s only point.

Also advancing multiple wrestlers to states were Cochranton, Fort LeBoeuf, Titusville, Girard, Commodore Perry, Grove City, and Eisenhower with two each.

Jackson Zimmerman (189, third), Brayden Kunselman (138, fourth), and Easton Belfiore (172, fourth) are also going to Hershey for Brookville.

“Jackson put together a really good tournament,” Klepfer said. “He avenged two of his four losses on the season. And obviously, Easton as a freshman getting through at that weight class is extremely tough to do.”

Action gets underway from Hershey on Thursday (March 10) at 9 a.m.
