WCSD approves Sheffield Football Co-Op With Warren For Remainder Of 2020 Season, Pending PIAA Approval

WARREN, Pa. – The Warren County School District Board of Directors, in a special meeting on Wednesday, approved the Termination of Cooperative Sports Agreement for football between Sheffield Area Middle/High School and Abraxas, as presented for the 2020 season.

This was contingent upon the PIAA approving the separate modification of the Cooperative Agreement for participation in football at Warren Area High School to add Sheffield Area Middle/High School for the 2020 season only and not the otherwise required two season time period.

Last Thursday, it was announced Sheffield was canceling the remainder of its season, sighting low numbers.

“The first hurdle is today,” said District 10 Chairman Pete Iacino. “If the PIAA board passes, it will then go the approval of District 10 and District 9.”

Both districts are scheduled to meet tomorrow morning.

Iacino did acknowledge the unique circumstances regarding this potential co-op, and to his knowledge, this is the first such case where it has been done in season, but that it shouldn’t serve as a hindrance. “A co-op can be created at any time, as long as it doesn’t effect classification,” he said.

Iacino also said that the board would have to set aside the application of the co-op rule, which runs in 2-year cycles.

“I don’t see any reason the co-op can’t be approved,” he said.

In the event this contingency is not met, this motion and the Termination of Cooperative Sports Agreement shall be null, void, and of no effect, and the Cooperative Sports Agreement shall remain in full force and effect.

The Cooperative Agreement between Warren Area High School and Youngsville High School shall remain in full force and effect with or without the addition of Sheffield Area Middle/High School.

The PIAA meets Wednesday at 2 p.m.
