PITTSBURGH – Redbank Valley is headed to its first-ever football state championship game after a 23-14 win over Bishop Canevin Friday.

The Bulldogs are the first District 9 team to reach the football state title game since Smethport in 1992.

After trailing 14-7 and being outgained 206-112 in the first half, the Bulldogs’ defense took control in the second half.

Chris Marshall’s 98-yard pick-6 with 7:44 to play in the third quarter tied it at 14-14.

Brenden Shreckengost scored from one yard out just 31 seconds into the fourth quarter to give RBV a 21-14 lead.

A safety made it 23-14, and Marshall’s second interception of the half sealed the win with less than two minutes to play.

Redbank Valley will play Bishop Guilfoyle, a 20-6 winner over Canton, for the PIAA Class 1A Championship Thursday at 1 p.m.

Chris Rossetti will have much more on the semifinal win later…
