2022 D9and10Sports Girls’ Bball Awards; All-D10 Powered by All American Awards and Engraving Announced

WARREN, Pa. – It was a season to remember for District 10 girls basketball, as many of the top players returned in 2021-22, and all not only lived up to the hype but exceeded it.

Kennedy Catholic led the way, making it to the PIAA Class 1A championship game before falling to Northumberland Christian.

The Golden Eagles nabbed a pair of All American Awards and Engraving /D9and10Sports.com All-District 10 major awards, as Layke Fields was named Rookie of the Year and Justin Magestro Chuck Daly Coach of the Year Presented by the Chuck Daly Foundation.

In addition, Fairview’s Hope Garrity, who led the Tigers to an unbeaten regular season, garnered Player of the Year honors.

                                      

Garrity was joined on the first team by fellow 2021 first-teamers, Warren’s Emma Ruhlman and Kennedy Catholic’s Bellah DiNardo, as well as Villa Maria’s Carissa Dunham and Jayden McBride and West Middlesex’s Emily Anthony.

The second team featured West Middlesex’s Carlie Beatty, Lakeview’s Reese Gadsby, Maplewood’s Sadie Thomas, Cambridge Springs’ Maddie Yanc, Fields, and Greenville’s Grace Cano.

On the third team are Mercyhurst Prep’s Olivia Kulyk, Kennedy Catholic’s Paris Gilmore, Warren’s Riley Childress, Maplewood’s Izzy Eimer, McDowell’s Caylen Spano, Greenville’s Josie Lewis and Girard’s Kayla Sharman.

Hope Garrity, Jr., Fairview – Garrity becomes the second-straight junior to win the award, joining Ruhlman from a season ago. Garrity surpassed the 1,000-point plateau and became the program’s all-time leading scorer this season, averaging 20.6 ppg. She also made an eye-popping 94 threes and was a 88% shooter from the free-throw line.

Layke Fields, Fr. Kennedy Catholic – The Golden Eagle freshman actually led the team in scoring at 11.6 ppg. while averaging 7.8 rpg., 1.3 blocks per game and shot 64 percent from the floor. She saved her best for last, scoring 21 points and pulling down 12 rebounds in the state championship game.

2022 D9AND10SPORTS.COM GIRLS’ BASKETBALL DISTRICT 10 CHUCK DALY COACH OF THE YEAR AS PRESENTED BY THE CHUCK DALY FOUNDATION POWERED BY ALL AMERICAN AWARDS AND ENGRAVING

Justin Magestro, Kennedy Catholic – Magestro guided the Golden Eagles to their first PIAA championship game appearance since 2001, and they nearly pulled off the state crown, leading 36-31 at halftime before Northumberland rallied. The Golden Eagles cruised to the District 10 title and into the state title game, playing just one single-digit game in that stretch, a 51-45 win over Portage in the PIAA semifinals. They finished with an overall record of 25-3.

About Chuck Daly: Daly was a 1948 graduate of Kane High School who started his coaching career at Punxsutawney High School (1956-63, 111 wins, D9 title in 1958 and league titles in 1958, 1962, and 1963) before moving into the college and pro ranks where he won two NBA titles with the Detroit Pistons. Daly also coached the 1992 United States Olympic “Dream Team” to a gold medal finish. He was inducted into the James Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994. In addition to coaching the Pistons for nine years going 467-271, he spent a little under a season coaching the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1981-82 and coached the New Jersey Nets and the Orlando Magic in the 1990s. He was also the head coach at Boston College and Penn in the college ranks. The NBA continues to honor his coaching legacy with the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award given annually to a longtime NBA coach’s life in basketball and his “standard of integrity, competitive excellence and tireless promotion” of the game.

About the Chuck Daly Foundation: The Chuck Daly Foundation was formed in Punxsutawney in 2016 by 1960 PAHS graduate George “Butch” White, who played basketball under Daly. The foundation was formed primarily to create scholarships for both male and female student/athletes in both basketball and golf.
